Audience & automations
Segments
Saved groups of contacts defined by tags, fields and source: how they are computed, when they refresh, and what they are for.
A segment is a saved definition of a group of contacts: not a fixed list of people, but the rule that decides who is in it.
Building one
A segment is built from what your contacts carry: tags, custom fields
and source (how they arrived). "Everyone tagged pricing who came from
Instagram" is a segment.
Because segments are built from tags and fields, they are only as good as the tagging your automations do. See contacts.
Definitions, not snapshots
A segment is recomputed rather than frozen, so someone who earns the tag tomorrow is in it tomorrow. Membership counts are shown against each segment, and a segment can be recomputed on demand if you have just changed its definition and want to see the effect immediately.
What they are for
Two things:
- Targeting a broadcast: the main use.
- Understanding your audience: the counts alone often say something useful about which of your topics actually lands.
Keep them few and meaningful
A segment for every possible combination of tags is a maintenance burden with no payoff. Build the three or four that correspond to real decisions you make.
They do not grant permission
Being in a segment does not mean someone can be messaged. Whether a broadcast can reach a given contact is decided at send time by the platform's rules. See staying inside platform rules.
